Viocare and Lambent Data Announce Partnership, including Receiving Grant to Improve Food Security in New Jersey

December 18, 2023
Viocare, Inc. and Lambent Data, Inc. have announced that the New Jersey Commission on Science, Innovation and Technology (“CSIT”) has awarded a grant for the proposal on which Viocare and Lambent partnered to improve food security.

Through this grant, Viocare and Lambent will further develop technology that 1) assists low-income families to thrive by addressing nutrition and social drivers of food insecurity and 2) supports social service and healthcare practitioners in helping these families flourish.

Viocare and Lambent have developed a strategic partnership that includes this work in NJ and extends elsewhere in the U.S.

In this project, Viocare and Lambent will further develop and integrate the following components: 1) Viocare’s experience in building evidence-based nutritional assessments licensed by world-leading hospitals, universities, and other institutions, 2) Updating of Viocare’s Living Well Navigator (LWN) technology to incorporate newly available technologies, 3) Assessments related to Social Drivers of Health (SDoHs), and 4) Lambent's OurREACH™ HIPAA-compliant collaborative platform and app, with data analytics and AI, which offers robust milestones, goals, integrated resources, and communication features regarding health and SDoHs.

“CSIT is pleased to support the work of Viocare through the Food and Agriculture R&D Pilot Grant Program.  Their innovative approach and partnership with Lambent Data in implementing new technologies, including AI, addresses the food security needs of communities across the state resulting in increased access to nutritious foods.  Providing R&D Seed Grants to businesses in critical sectors is both beneficial to the individual entities and important to the strength of NJ’s overall innovation economy,” said Judith Sheft, Executive Director, NJ Commission on Science, Innovation and Technology. Viocare Awarded a National Institiutes of Health SBIR Phase 1 Grant to Improve Pediatric Diet Assessment

We are pleased to announce that Viocare, along with co-researchers Drs. Niyati Parekh and Andrea Deierlein from New York University, have recently been awarded a National Institutes of Health SBIR Phase I grant, funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

The Phase I grant is to develop a prototype of Viocare’s Pediatric Food Intake System (P-FITS) to test feasibility for diet assessment self-administration within the pediatric population of U.S. children - ages 8 -14 years. P-FITS will integrate Viocare’s VioScreen graphical Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) technology with targeted 24-hour recalls (24HR) via a mobile app to provide:
  • Flexibility of use across clinical, research, and community settings
  • Automated, visually appealing, and self-administered for easy administration by computer, tablet, or smartphone
  • Improve accuracy of capturing usual dietary intake patterns of pediatric populations
The meteoric rise in prevalence of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases are highly correlated with poor diet pattern behaviors and increasingly being seen in pediatric populations. Our goal with this prototype is demonstrate the innovative combining of two techniques (FFQs with 24HR) will improve accuracy with a reduced burden of collection. Viocare’s VioScreen FFQ user interface will be adapted for pediatric use by modifying the set of food questions to match the population and inserting a number of short introductory videos and breaks to maintain engagement for completing the FFQ. Measuring diets in pediatric populations has been difficult to accomplish with accuracy. We are excited to pursue this research which will provide much needed insight into assessing pediatric diet and diet pattern behaviors which may implicate an increased risk for chronic disease into adult hood.
