Research Initiatives
We’re always striving to discover better answers for nutrition and diet.

At Viocare, research is ingrained in our DNA. We’re regularly involved in research initiatives, often in collaboration with leading government, academic and corporate organizations. We have been awarded more than $12 million in research through 25 National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants and contracts. It’s all part of our mission to take a leading role in defining the future of nutrition and wellness.

Here are highlights of our groundbreaking initiatives:
- Image recognition for next-generation food tracking. The Mobile Food Intake Visualization and Voice Recognizer (FIVR) uses image and speech recognition to enable individuals to easily and accurately track with a mobile phone the foods, calories and nutrients they consume. Through a National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) funded grant, we’re making it easier than ever to track and measure a meal's nutrition content.
- Coordination of care for Patient-Centered Medical Neighborhoods. We connect family practice care offices with retail dietitians through our dietary assessment and electronic nutrition record creation for EMR integration. By linking family practices to community resources, we’re enhancing coordination of care and helping drive behavior change in communities.
- Support of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) nutrigenomic study. The study seeks to understand the link between nutrition, an individual's genetic makeup and chronic disease. Viocare supported the FDA design and development of a database and web-based tool for the storage and analysis of lifestyle, biometric, genetic and nutrient data.
- Self-sustaining support networks for healthy communities. We created a unique, web-based wellness portal to enable communities to bring a sustainable wellness program to residents. The program builds enduring partnerships between local governments, health departments, community health care organizations, businesses and residents. It encourages and guides community members to increase their physical activity, manage their weight and develop and maintain healthier lifestyles.
- Decision support app to help people make healthy choices at restaurants. We developed a GPS-based mobile app that provides dietary decision support for clients and patients who are dining out. Where other apps find a place, this app finds a plate based on an individual's dietary needs.
